About This Access Site
The Afton Recreation Area provides excellent access to the Verdigris River, a major tributary of the Arkansas River system. The boat ramp and courtesy dock allow easy launching for kayaks, canoes, and small motorized boats. The Verdigris River is a large, navigable waterway, flowing over 311 miles with an average gradient of 1.9 ft/mile and an average flow of 6,586 cubic feet per second. This makes it a popular destination for recreational boating and paddling.

The Afton Recreation Area campground offers basic amenities like picnic tables, vault toilets, and a dump station, making it a convenient option for those looking to spend time on the river. The location, just upstream of the Chouteau Lock and Dam 17, provides access to the main navigation channel as well as the scenic backwater areas. Boaters, anglers, and paddlers can enjoy the natural beauty of the Verdigris River from this well-equipped access site.
