Alibates Flint Quarries

The Alibates access point provides boat ramp access to the Canadian River in Potter County, located approximately 35 miles north of Amarillo near the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. This is a non-reservable public access site managed as part of the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument. The area offers a unique combination of paddling and cultural history, with the visitor center featuring exhibits on the monument's 13,000-year history and ranger-led programs available on select days (call 806-857-6680 for current schedules and reservations).

Note that water levels can fluctuate significantly at this location—recent reports indicate the water line may be considerably distant from the ramp during low-water periods, so contact the visitor center before launching to confirm current conditions. Several campgrounds operate nearby, including Harbor Bay, Chimney Hollow, and McBride Canyon, making this a viable base for multi-day paddling trips. The Canadian River in this region flows through the arid Texas Panhandle; paddlers should be prepared for exposure to sun and wind and plan accordingly with adequate water and sun protection.

The Alibates Visitor Center is home to exhibits, a theater and outdoor gardens, showcasing the history of Alibates Flint. It is also the meeting place for ranger-led hikes and tours of the monument, demonstrations, and numerous special events throughout the year.
