Located off Monroe Street near 42nd Street in Allegan, this DNR access point provides a hard-surfaced boat ramp onto Lake Allegan, an impoundment of the Kalamazoo River. The site offers parking for more than 10 vehicles and is clearly marked with a roadside sign. This upper dam access is well-positioned for paddlers looking to explore the impounded water or access downriver sections of the Kalamazoo River.
**Important considerations:** The hard-surfaced ramp is designed for moderate-sized watercraft; launching and retrieving of larger boats may be difficult due to water depth and body size limitations. Paddlers planning longer trips should note that this site is approximately 2.5 miles upstream from the Above Calkins Dam Access site. If you're planning to paddle downstream during hunting or fishing seasons, recreational access may be limited, and you should plan alternative exit points such as Pine Creek or Fox Mountain/Bittersweet public access areas. The Kalamazoo River Watershed Council provides detailed maps and trip planning information for the approximately 50 access sites available along the river.
