The Alligator River Boat Ramp, located off Old Ferry Landing Road in Columbia, provides public access to a medium-sized blackwater river that flows toward the Atlantic Ocean. The Alligator River is a 28-mile waterway with minimal gradient and calm, slow-moving water (average velocity of 1.08 ft/sec), making it suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and recreational boaters. The ramp is maintained by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and is free to use.
This access point is ideal for exploring the unique ecology of the region, including the rare pocosin wetland habitat protected by the 110,000-acre Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Paddlers can expect a peaceful flatwater experience typical of coastal plain rivers, with opportunities to observe wildlife including alligators, wading birds, and other native species. Note that there are no restroom facilities at this ramp, so plan accordingly. The area is open 24 hours for public use.
