The Horsehead boat ramp provides access to Angostura Reservoir, a large 155-boat-slip marina facility located at the southeast edge of the Black Hills on the Cheyenne River in southwestern South Dakota. This is an excellent launching point for kayakers and canoeists seeking a scenic paddling destination in western South Dakota. The reservoir offers protected waters ideal for recreational paddling, with opportunities to explore along the shoreline and enjoy the surrounding landscape.
Angostura Recreation Area is a full-service facility managed by the Division of Parks and Recreation, with amenities including a floating convenience store, restaurant, swimming pool, and fishing amenities. Beyond the marina zone, much of the reservoir allows full-throttle boating. The area is well-suited for both day trips and extended visits, with campgrounds available nearby and canoe/kayak rentals offered through the resort. The reservoir supports healthy populations of walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie, pike, and bluegill for those interested in fishing.
For planning your visit, contact Angostura Recreation Area at 605.745.6996 or Angostura@state.sd.us. Reservations can be made at www.campsd.com. The site's location near Hot Springs and proximity to other regional recreation areas makes it a convenient destination for water-based activities in the Black Hills region.
