Angostura Recreation Area - North

The Angostura Recreation Area North ramp provides access to Angostura Reservoir, a scenic 4,400+ acre impoundment on the Cheyenne River in southwestern South Dakota near the Nebraska border. The reservoir features approximately 42 miles of shoreline with clear water and sandy beaches, making it suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. This is one of the larger reservoirs in western South Dakota and offers excellent conditions for paddling across its expansive surface.

The recreation area is well-developed and managed by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. Amenities include multiple boat launch options throughout the park, a marina, swimming beach, and fishing opportunities for walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie, northern pike, and other species. The North ramp location provides convenient access to the northern section of the reservoir. Nearby camping is available at Cold Brook Campground (reservable) and other established campgrounds in the area, including options at Cheyenne, Horsehead, Hat Creek, and Cascade.

The calm reservoir setting contrasts with the Cheyenne River's natural flow upstream and downstream. Paddlers should note that motorized watercraft operate at full throttle in most of the reservoir beyond the marina area, so awareness of boat traffic is recommended. The site's location near the Black Hills provides scenic backdrop and access to broader regional recreation opportunities.
