The South ramp at Angostura Recreation Area provides convenient access to Angostura Reservoir, a 4,407-acre impoundment on the Cheyenne River in southwestern South Dakota near the Nebraska border. Located at the southeast edge of the Black Hills, this ramp is one of several launch points around the reservoir's 42 miles of shoreline, making it an excellent option for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboaters. The relatively large, calm reservoir is ideal for paddling and offers protected waters suitable for various skill levels.
The recreation area is well-developed with comprehensive facilities including a full-service marina with 155 boat slips, a floating convenience store, restaurant, fish cleaning station, and rental options for canoes and kayaks. The South access point serves as an alternative to the main marina complex, reducing crowding and providing direct water access. Angostura is known for solid fishing opportunities including walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie, and northern pike, with a dedicated fishing pier and dock available.
Plan to launch early or late in the day to avoid congestion during peak season. The reservoir's size and relatively calm conditions make it suitable for all paddling experiences, from leisurely day trips exploring the shoreline to longer excursions. Nearby Cottonwood Springs Lake offers an additional recreation option just 5 miles west if you're exploring the area.
