About This Access Site
Ashford Lake offers a public boat ramp access point located in Hiawatha within Michigan's Hiawatha National Forest. This rustic, inland lake setting provides a peaceful paddling destination for kayakers and canoeists seeking a serene forest environment. The lake is situated in Schoolcraft County's scenic Upper Peninsula landscape, making it an excellent choice for those looking to escape crowds while enjoying water recreation.

The nearby Bass Lake Campsite (also called Ashford Lake Campsite) offers rustic camping facilities for visitors planning overnight trips. To reach the access area from Manistique, drive north on M-94 for 22 miles to County Road 437, turn west and continue 4.6 miles to Forest Road 2792, then turn east for approximately 0.75 mile. For reservations or additional information about camping and facilities, contact the Hiawatha National Forest at 906-474-6442 or 906-387-2512. Several other campgrounds, including Steuben Lake, Leg Lake, and Colwell Lake, are located within 10 miles if you're exploring multiple paddling destinations in the area.

Visitors will be able to enjoy swimming, berry picking, and fishing at these dispersed campsites. Licenses are required for fishing in Michigan waters.
Swimming is considered poor at the Bass Lake campsite. 
However, Bass Lake hosts a great fishery of northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass and bluegills. There is a developed boat launch located on the eastern shore of Bass Lake, approximately four miles away from the campsite. There is no back-in boat access at the campsite.

Natural Features
The Bass Lake campsite is located on the western shore of the enormous 290-acre Bass Lake. This site is nestled among hardwoods and is approximately 35 ft x 50 ft in size. It is suitable for only one small family trailer.

There are a number of horse, bike, and hiking trails within minutes of several of the sites. In over a mile from these campsites, visitors can expect to find: bait shops, general and grocery stores, gas, a pay phone, trailheads, a fishing pier, biking, and kayak/canoe rentals. 
Gasoline, groceries, fishing and camping supplies, boat rentals, ice and MDNR licenses are available at Steuben, approximately three miles to the Northeast on County Road 437 (CR-437)
