The Atchafalaya Basin Bridge (West) boat ramp provides access to the canal system beneath the I-10 bridge over the Whiskey Bay Pilot Channel in Iberville Parish. This location offers paddlers and boaters a gateway to explore the expansive Atchafalaya Basin, America's largest river swamp. The access point is situated near the "Louisiana Airborne Memorial Bridge" and connects to a network of nearby lakes and bayous, including Lake Pelba, Lake Bigeaux, and Henderson Lake, all within roughly a mile of the launch.
**What to Expect:** This canal access area can experience significant motorboat traffic, so paddlers should exercise caution and stay aware of larger vessels. Water levels in the Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge fluctuate seasonally, with potential for flooding in late winter and spring. The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area and Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge (established 1984) provide excellent opportunities for exploring the unique ecosystem of twisting bayous and pristine swamp habitat. Plan accordingly for changing water conditions if visiting during wet seasons.
