About This Access Site
The Bill Newton Public Access Site, located off Tannehill Road near Columbus, provides convenient public access to the Driftwood River for kayakers, canoeists, and boaters. This site serves as an excellent launching point for paddling trips, positioned approximately 6.5 miles downstream from the Sugar Creek Access Area and about 5 miles upstream from the Lowell Bridge Public Access Site, making it ideal for day trips or multi-access paddling routes.

The Driftwood River in this area supports a healthy warm-water fishery, including bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, and tiger muskellunge. Paddlers should note that while some access points in the Driftwood State Fishing Area feature concrete boat ramps, conditions vary across different public access sites. For specific details about ramp conditions, parking availability, facilities, and any current access restrictions, contact the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish & Wildlife before your visit.
