About This Access Site
Located on Backbone Lake in Forestville, this boat ramp provides access to both the scenic lake and the Maquoketa River downstream. The ramp is situated near the southwest end of the lake at the dam, making it convenient for launching kayaks, canoes, and small motorized boats. Note that **electric motors only** are permitted on Backbone Lake itself. The site offers nearby amenities including a beach lodge, concession stand, and boat rental services through the on-site boathouse.

Paddlers looking to explore the Maquoketa River below the dam should be aware that the downstream section features some scenic rock outcrops but also contains strainers and fast current that require advanced boat handling skills. This ramp is recommended as a take-out point for multi-day river trips rather than as a launch point for downstream paddling. The surrounding Backbone State Park provides camping and cabin accommodations for extended visits.
