About This Access Site
Bear Island Lake's east-side access point offers a carry-down launch for kayakers and canoeists looking to explore this 2,351-acre water body located 10 miles southwest of Ely. The lake features relatively deep water (up to 62 feet) with a rocky bottom composition of rubble, boulder, and gravel. Paddlers should note that the water is bog-stained, which is typical for this region. The east access provides convenient parking and foot access to a dispersed campsite for those planning overnight trips.

For boaters seeking additional launch options, the lake has three public boat ramps available, including one on the southwest side, giving paddlers flexibility depending on their route. Bear Island Lake is connected to nearby paddling destinations including Johnson Lake, One Pine Lake, and Whisper Lake, making it an excellent hub for multi-lake trips. Resorts operate on portions of the shoreline, and there are four backcountry campsites available for camping. The Taconite State Trail meets the lake at the east end, offering additional land-based recreation opportunities for visitors.
