About This Access Site
Bear Island Lake is a 2,351-acre lake located 10 miles southwest of Ely in St. Louis County. This northeast access point (also called the carry-down access on the east side) provides an entry point for kayakers, canoeists, and small watercraft. The lake features up to 62 feet of depth with mostly rubble, boulder, and gravel shorelines, and has brown, bog-stained water typical of the region. Note that there are also additional boat ramps available on other parts of the lake if you prefer a different launch location.

**Directions:** From Babbitt, take County Highway 21 north to CR 904 and turn west. Turn north on Bear Island Lake Road (CR 490) and follow the signs to the access point. The lake is accessible year-round, though seasonal conditions should be considered before paddling.

**On the Lake:** Bear Island Lake offers several recreational opportunities, with four backcountry campsites and a sandy beach on the island itself, making it suitable for extended paddling trips. Nearby water bodies include Johnson Lake, One Pine Lake, and Whisper Lake. While there are resorts on portions of the shoreline, public access remains available. This is a non-reservable access point managed as a public facility.
