About This Access Site
Located along the scenic Beartooth Highway (US 212) just west of Beartooth Pass, this boat ramp provides convenient access to Island Lake at 9,518 feet elevation. The lake spans 146 acres with depths reaching approximately 100 feet, offering good paddling conditions in this high-altitude alpine setting. A short, paved road off the highway leads directly to the access area.

The day-use facility includes a well-maintained boat ramp, parking, picnic tables, vault toilets, and bear-proof storage—making it suitable for both day trips and extended paddling excursions. Island Lake Campground is located within the immediate area, providing overnight camping options for those planning multi-day trips. This is an excellent base for exploring the Beartooth Plateau lakes region and accessing both the lake and surrounding trail systems.

Paddlers should note the high elevation and exposure to mountain weather conditions typical of this pass area. The facility is accessible from both Wyoming and Montana sides via US 212, making it a practical stop for kayakers and canoeists traveling through the Beartooth corridor.
