About This Access Site
Big Creek is a medium-sized river (Stream Order 5) with a drainage area of 174 square miles and an average flow of 142 cubic feet per second, making it suitable for various watercraft. The creek features a moderate gradient of 16.1 feet per mile and average velocity of 1.82 feet per second, providing decent current but generally manageable conditions for kayakers and canoeists. The ramp provides access to the upper portion of Big Creek's 24-mile length before it eventually flows toward the Red River system.

The Deville access point offers a convenient launch location for exploring this waterway. Paddlers can expect typical Louisiana swamp and creek environment, with the nearby Grand Cote National Wildlife Refuge providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities in the area. Before paddling, check current water conditions and flow rates, as Louisiana creeks can be affected by seasonal rainfall and upstream dam releases. The area's mild elevation change (253–134 feet over the creek's length) suggests relatively gentle paddling conditions suitable for most skill levels.
