Big Piney Creek is a designated National Wild & Scenic River that offers excellent paddling and fishing opportunities in western Arkansas. The boat ramp at Piney Bay Campground provides access to this large, free-flowing headwater stream.
At over 100 miles long, Big Piney Creek is a sizeable river with an average flow of 632 cubic feet per second. With a total elevation drop of nearly 2,000 feet, the creek has a moderate gradient, making it navigable by kayak, canoe, and small motorized boats during normal water levels. Anglers can target a variety of fish species including bass, bream, crappie, and catfish.
Piney Bay Campground, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, offers campsites, picnic facilities, and direct access to the creek. Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for natural obstructions and shoals, especially during low water periods. Nearby recreation areas like the Hurricane Creek Wilderness provide excellent hiking and backcountry opportunities for those looking to explore the Ozark region.
