About This Access Site
Big Rice Lake is a large, shallow 1,870-acre lake located 14 miles north of Virginia, MN, offering a public boat ramp for small watercraft. The lake's maximum depth of just 5 feet makes it ideal for kayakers and canoeists, though larger motorboats may have limited options. Access the ramp via Highway 53 north to County Road 131, then follow County Road 68 to Pelton Road (County 405). There are no launch fees at this access point.

The area is known for its cultural and ecological significance—wild rice has been harvested here for 2,000 years and continues today. Beyond paddling, the site offers a rustic drive-in campground with 3 campsites, fishing opportunities, and duck hunting. The ramp is open year-round and accessible during most weather conditions, making it a reliable launch point for exploring this unique shallow-water ecosystem.
