About This Access Site
Big Sand Lake's state-owned public access, located on the south shore off Grouse Road near the Sand River outlet, provides convenient launching for kayakers, canoeists, and small boats. The access site features two lake boat ramps and one river boat ramp, along with docks and a fishing pier. This 1,635-acre lake with a maximum depth of 135 feet offers excellent paddling opportunities, with additional water access available via the inlet connecting to Lake Emma and from the Sand River.

The day-use facilities are integrated with an adjacent campground and include amenities such as a beach, playground, and short hiking trail—making it a good option for paddlers planning a full day on the water. The lake's substantial size and depth make it suitable for various watercraft and skill levels, though paddlers should be prepared for potential motorboat traffic typical of larger recreational lakes in the Park Rapids area.
