About This Access Site
The Birch Lake South boat ramp provides public access to this expansive 7,074-acre reservoir located northeast of Babbitt in St. Louis County. The ramp features gravel/dirt launching surface suitable for kayaks, canoes, and motorboats. This is one of four public access points on the lake, making it a convenient entry point for paddlers exploring the water body. Birch Lake reaches depths of approximately 25 feet and is known for its brown water typical of the region.

The lake supports popular fishing and paddling activities year-round. Anglers pursue northern pike, walleye, perch, and crappie from boats or shore. Paddlers should note that several portages and carry-in options are available for those exploring connected waterways—the Kawishiwi River is the lake's primary outlet. A backcountry campsite accessible only by water or foot is available on a first-come, first-served basis, making this an excellent staging point for multi-day paddling trips in the region.
