The Birches access site offers a concrete boat ramp on the eastern shore of Lake Winnibigoshish, one of Minnesota's largest lakes at over 56,000 acres. Located north of Highway 2 near Deer River in Cass County, this Mississippi River Headwaters Water Trail location provides straightforward access to productive fishing and paddling waters. A large parking lot and picnic shelter are available at the recreation area, making it convenient for day trips and multi-day excursions.

Paddlers and boaters can expect a well-developed facility suitable for kayaks, canoes, and motorboats. The lake supports healthy populations of northern pike, walleye, cisco, bass, and panfish. For those planning overnight trips, several campgrounds are within 10 miles, including USFS-managed options like Winnie Campground and Cut Foot Horse Campground (both reservable).
