Black River Dam Landing provides public boat access to the Black River near Jonesville in Catahoula Parish. This is a developed access point on a major river system—the Black River is a large, powerful waterway (Stream Order 9) with an average flow of over 10,500 cubic feet per second and a moderate gradient of 1.5 feet per mile. Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for substantial current and water volume typical of a major river system.
The landing offers access to the lower Black River below the dam structure. Both sides of the river provide access to the area below the dam, though the side near the landing is typically easier to navigate. The site includes parking and a boat ramp. Be aware that the Black River is part of the Ouachita-Black Rivers System, which includes multiple locks and dams throughout Arkansas and Louisiana—plan your route accordingly if traveling longer distances. The nearby Catahoula National Wildlife Refuge (about 12 miles away) offers additional recreational opportunities in the region.
For paddlers exploring this section, the river's substantial flow and major river character mean you should have appropriate experience and equipment. Check local conditions before launching, and be aware of dam operations that may affect water levels and current.
