About This Access Site
Located 13 miles south of Galena, Illinois, Blanding Landing offers a public boat ramp providing access to the Mississippi River's main channel and productive backwaters. This Army Corps of Engineers facility is situated on the east bank in a scenic river valley with historical significance—the site sits amid mineral deposits that attracted prospectors during America's first mineral rush in the early 1800s. The campground includes 37 campsites (30 with 50-amp electrical service), shower facilities, a dump station, and picnic areas, making it suitable for paddlers planning multi-day trips.

The Mississippi at this location is a major river system averaging over 685,000 cubic feet per second flow with moderate current. Paddlers and boaters should expect typical main-channel conditions with a gentle average gradient of 0.8 feet per mile. The backwater areas accessible from this launch offer calmer paddling options and are noted for fishing opportunities. A daily fee applies for boat ramp use.

**Getting There:** From Galena, take Highway 20 south for 13 miles, then turn west on Blackjack Road and follow directional signs—avoid Diggin Hill Road. For campground reservations or facility information, contact the entrance station at 815-591-2326 (5-8 PM daily) or the ranger station at 563-582-0881.
