About This Access Site
Blythe Landing Park provides access to Lake Norman, the impounded waters of the Catawba River in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Lake Norman is a major reservoir created by damming the Catawba River, transforming the lower sections into a calm lake environment ideal for recreational boating. The site is located in the Charlotte metropolitan area and serves as a launch point for the 22-mile-long reservoir that stretches across multiple counties.

The Catawba River drainage basin is substantial, covering 4,396 square miles and representing a major river system. While the river itself averages significant flow rates of over 6,000 cubic feet per second upstream, Lake Norman creates a slack-water environment at this access point, making it suitable for a variety of watercraft. The impoundment dramatically alters water conditions compared to the free-flowing river, creating a stable recreational lake environment.

Paddlers and boaters using Blythe Landing should be aware that Lake Norman can experience significant recreational boat traffic, particularly on weekends and during warm months. The lake is popular for fishing, cruising, and water sports. Given the calm lake conditions created by the dam impoundment, this site is accessible to paddlers of various skill levels, though boaters should always be prepared for changing weather conditions and respect established boating regulations for the lake.
