Breakwater Point in Little Compton provides convenient access to Sakonnet Harbor and the Sakonnet River via two cement plank boat ramps. This state-owned launching facility serves as an excellent starting point for exploring Sakonnet Harbor, the Sakonnet River system, and Rhode Island Sound. The site is located near Sakonnet Point, where an 800-foot breakwater provides protection and helps define the harbor entrance.
Paddlers and small boaters will find this access point well-positioned for both river exploration and open water ventures. The ramps provide reliable access to the Sakonnet River's tidal waters, making it suitable for kayaks, canoes, and motorized vessels. Those heading toward the Atlantic should note that navigation buoys mark the main channel—look for red bell buoy 2A and flashing red 2 at the west breakwater to safely enter the harbor from the river.
The area offers proximity to significant natural resources, including the John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge and the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, making it an appealing base for exploring protected waters and wildlife habitat. Parking is available at the official parking area near the ramps, though it can be difficult to locate.
