The Brown Lakes State Wildlife Area in Hinsdale County, Colorado offers a boat ramp access site for kayakers, canoeists, and small motorized watercraft on South Clear Creek. This scenic location in the headwaters of the Rio Grande provides an opportunity to explore the mountain landscape and wildlife of the area.
The boat ramp is accessible via Forest Road 515, about 3.5 miles north of the Mineral/Hinsdale county line off CO 149 south of Lake City. A valid hunting or fishing license or SWA pass is required for visitors 16 and older to access the wildlife area. Visitors should check current regulations before planning their trip.
While on-site amenities like picnic facilities and restrooms are available, there are no developed campgrounds within 10 miles of the boat ramp. The nearest option is Bristol Head Campground. Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for the high-elevation, mountain environment and assess weather and water conditions appropriately before launching.
