Buena Vista County Park in Independence offers free public access to the Willamette River with trailer parking available. This Polk County park features restrooms, picnic tables, and scenic river views. The park sits at the historic site of the former Halls Ferry, established in the 1880s, and provides a convenient launch point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats exploring this section of the Willamette. Note that the original boat ramp was removed in 2015, so visitors should confirm current launch conditions before planning a trip.
The surrounding area offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, particularly osprey and Canada geese nesting on transmission towers across the river, as well as beaver activity along the banks. The park's location near downtown Independence means paddlers have easy access to local amenities just a short walk away. Nearby Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge (at the Santiam-Willamette confluence) and Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge provide additional wildlife viewing and paddling exploration options in the region.
