About This Access Site
**Location & Access:** Burnt Coat Harbor is located on Swans Island in Hancock County, Maine, approximately 8 miles southwest of Mount Desert Island. This is a **boat-only access site**—reach Swans Island by ferry from Bass Harbor, then launch from this ramp to enter the harbor. Note that Swans Island is accessible only by ferry or private boat.

**Harbor Conditions & Navigation:** Burnt Coat Harbor is a working fishing village and provides excellent shelter in rough weather. However, the entrance is narrow and challenging, with several islands and reefs in the approach—most notably Harbor Island at the harbor's mouth. Enter past the lighthouse on Hockamock Head. Local knowledge is recommended for unfamiliar boaters, and a rising tide is advised for safe passage. The harbor is primarily used by local fishing craft.

**Facilities & Nearby Amenities:** Gas and diesel fuel are available from the local fisherman's co-op. The nearest campground is Seawall Campground (reservable), located within 10 miles. Kayakers and canoeists should plan accordingly, as services are limited and the site serves an active fishing community rather than recreational boaters.
