About This Access Site
The Northeast access to Burntside Lake is located at Fenske Lake Campground, situated approximately 10 miles east of Ely via Highway 169 North and Echo Trail. This remote campground offers a convenient base for paddlers and boaters exploring the 7,314-acre lake and its clear waters. The access point provides entry to one of the region's premier paddling destinations with connections to nearby portage routes and water trails throughout Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Burntside Lake features five public boat accesses, though the two most heavily used ramps are located on the south shore (Van Vac Road and Burntside Lodge). With a maximum depth of 126 feet and clear water conditions, the lake is suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. Fenske Lake Campground is reservable through Recreation.gov, making it an excellent option for multi-day paddling trips.
