Located in Mount Carmel near Calhoun Falls, this access point provides a single-lane paved boat ramp with parking for approximately 20 vehicle/trailer combinations. The site includes a vault restroom and is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Richard B. Russell Lake recreation area. This is a day-use facility with no overnight reservations available.
The ramp provides access to J. Strom Thurmond Lake (also known as Richard B. Russell Lake), a substantial 71,100-acre impoundment on the Savannah River with an average depth of 37 feet and maximum depths exceeding 139 feet. Paddlers should note that this is a dam-created lake rather than moving river current. The lake spans multiple counties and offers 26 boat ramps total across the system, along with numerous fishing and recreation opportunities. The relatively modest facilities at Calhoun Park make it a straightforward access point for launching kayaks, canoes, and small watercraft into the main body of the lake.
