About This Access Site
The Shattuc access point provides boat ramp access to Carlyle Lake, Illinois' largest man-made reservoir located about 50 miles east of St. Louis. This 26,000-acre lake offers excellent opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and motorized boating, with no outboard motor size restrictions. The lake features eleven boat ramps distributed around its shoreline, giving paddlers multiple launch and takeout options for exploring different sections of the water.

The Shattuc ramp serves as one of several convenient access points for accessing the main lake body. Nearby alternatives include the popular Allen Branch Day Use Area (featuring a four-lane ramp with handicapped-accessible dock) and Dam West Day Use Area (with two-lane ramp and marina services). The area is well-suited for day trips and extended outings, with three reservable campgrounds within 10 miles—Boulder, Dam West, and Dam East-McNair—offering overnight accommodations for paddlers planning multi-day adventures.

Carlyle Lake is particularly attractive for recreational paddling and sailing, with calm, protected waters ideal for kayaks and canoes. Plan to contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (St. Louis District) for current facility conditions and any seasonal restrictions.
