About This Access Site
Catfish Bay provides boat ramp access to J. Strom Thurmond Lake on the Savannah River in McCormick County, South Carolina. This site offers a convenient entry point to one of the largest Corps of Engineers lakes east of the Mississippi River, featuring 71,100 acres of water and 1,200 miles of shoreline. The lake's average depth of 37 feet (with maximum depths around 139 feet) makes it suitable for various water activities including kayaking, canoeing, and motorboating.

As one of 26 boat ramps around Thurmond Lake, Catfish Bay is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Paddlers can expect ample opportunity to explore the expansive lake system, with numerous fishing spots and scenic shoreline to explore. The lake is well-developed with multiple amenities across its recreation areas, including marinas with pumpouts, fishing access points, and several parks and camping facilities for day-use and overnight visits.
