About This Access Site
The Clay County Boat Launch provides river access at Missouri River Mile 781.0, located just east of Vermillion on the South Dakota side near the confluence with Ames Creek. This one-lane ramp is a straightforward put-in for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats heading onto the Missouri River. Basic amenities include a pit toilet, and a county campground is located approximately 1/4 mile north of the launch. To reach the site, take South Dakota Highway 50 east from Yankton (approximately 21.6 miles).

This access point is well-positioned for paddlers exploring the Missouri River corridor and is part of Clay County's broader network of 35+ parks and multiple boat ramps. The surrounding area offers additional recreational opportunities, and primitive camping options are available at nearby Goat Island and Bow Creek campgrounds within 10 miles. Note that a park entrance license may be required depending on current regulations—check with South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks for current requirements and any seasonal considerations before your visit.
