About This Access Site
Clinton Lake is a 4,900-acre cooling lake managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, offering six public boat ramps for paddlers and boaters. The Birkbeck access area provides a convenient launch point for exploring this expansive waterway. All IDNR ramps are equipped with wheelchair-accessible boat docks for easier entry and exit.

**Conditions & Regulations:** Clinton Lake operates under a no-wake policy for all watercraft—electric motors only or paddle-powered boats are the primary options. Wind can create rough conditions, particularly on the main lake; kayakers and canoeists in small watercraft should stick to the sheltered North Fork area of Salt Creek on windy days. Swimming is prohibited within 100 yards of bridges, boat ramps, and docks.

**Amenities & Recreation:** The lake is known for excellent fishing opportunities. Beach access is available for $2 per day per person. Nearby facilities include picnic shelters at multiple access areas (Peninsula and Weldon have electricity and can be reserved for a fee), as well as a fishing pier at the Spillway Access Area. Plan your visit with the understanding that this is a large, wind-exposed lake—ideal for extended paddling on calm days and for anglers seeking a productive fishing destination.
