About This Access Site
This modest boat launch in Portland's Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area is best suited for kayaks and canoes. The ramp itself is small with no dock, but it provides excellent access to Coal Creek Slough and a network of backwater waterways within the Willow Grove Wetland. Paddlers can extend their journey westward—approximately 4.5 miles of paddling reaches the Columbia River through the connected slough system.

The Columbia Slough area offers scenic paddling through a natural wetland environment with abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. However, be aware that water levels drop significantly by mid-summer, and aquatic vegetation can make paddling more challenging during that season. Spring and early summer are generally the best times to visit. Alternative access points are available at Site P4 and a dedicated canoe launch near 166th and Airport Way, which features a nearby pond popular with waterfowl watchers.
