This public boat ramp provides access to the Connecticut River, one of New England's major waterways. The Connecticut River is a large, powerful stream (classified as Stream Order 8) with an average flow of nearly 23,000 cubic feet per second and moderate current of about 5 feet per second. Paddlers should be aware that water levels and flow rates can vary significantly with seasonal conditions, and temporary closures may occur during high-flow periods. The ramp is typically open seasonally, with closures from mid-November through mid-May.
The Chicopee access point offers convenient parking and is well-positioned for exploring the scenic Connecticut River corridor. This 409-mile river features a diverse landscape with significant elevation changes along its course. Paddlers of various skill levels can find suitable sections of the river, though the strong average current and high discharge volume mean this is best suited for experienced paddlers. The area is located near recreational attractions including Springfield Armory National Historic Site and access to the New England National Scenic Trail, making it an excellent base for exploring the region.
Before launching, check current water conditions and flow rates, as high water can create challenging conditions. Multiple other access points exist along the Connecticut River corridor if you need alternatives, and some nearby locations offer canoe and kayak rentals for those without their own equipment.
