Cottonwood Campground is a Bureau of Reclamation recreation area located on the southern tip of Canyon Ferry Reservoir in southwestern Montana. While the campground itself sits slightly inland, boat access to the reservoir is available through a day-use area past the campground, where a concrete boat ramp provides launch access to a side channel of the Missouri River. This location offers a convenient base for paddlers and boaters exploring the 33,500-acre reservoir and its 96 miles of shoreline.
The nearby Hellgate Boat Ramp and Day Use Area features two concrete boat ramps, a dedicated parking area for boat trailers, and picnic facilities for day users. Canyon Ferry Reservoir is known for excellent fishing opportunities including rainbow trout, perch, ling, and walleye, making it popular with anglers. Facilities at the broader recreation area include campgrounds, day-use areas with shelters, swimming beaches, and three marinas. Paddlers should note that conditions can vary across the large reservoir, so it's worth checking current water and weather conditions before launching.
