About This Access Site
The County Road 256 access point in Little Falls provides a convenient launch onto the Platte River, a major river system with significant flow and current. With an average flow of 6,595 cubic feet per second and moderate gradient of 6.6 feet per mile, this section of the Platte offers moderate current suitable for paddlers with some river experience. The ramp accommodates both trailer launches and hand-carried boats, making it accessible for kayaks, canoes, and small motorboats up to 18 feet.

This access site offers excellent facilities for paddlers, including designated parking for both vehicles and boat trailers, restroom facilities, drinking water, picnic tables, and wheelchair accessibility. The launch provides an ideal starting point for extended paddling adventures—paddlers can enjoy scenic stretches through natural wetland areas, including proximity to the Crane Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, one of Minnesota's largest intact wetland complexes. The site is open 24 hours daily and is free for public use.

**Planning Your Trip:** Before launching, be aware of the river's consistent current and flow. This major river (Stream Order 10) requires respect for water conditions and basic paddling skills. Check current water conditions and weather before departing, and always wear a life jacket. The nearby wildlife refuge offers excellent opportunities to observe migratory waterfowl and other wildlife throughout your paddle.
