**Access Overview**
Dam Site Campground offers two boat ramps—a single-lane ramp with courtesy dock and a double-lane ramp—providing reliable access to John Redmond Reservoir on the Neosho River near New Strawn, Kansas. The facility is located on the upstream side of John Redmond Dam and includes a full campground with 21 campsites, making it suitable for paddlers planning overnight trips. The ramps are well-suited for kayaks, canoes, and larger boats.

**Water Conditions & Character**
The Neosho River at this location is a major stream (Stream Order 8) with an average flow of approximately 10,559 cubic feet per second and a gentle slope of 2.1 feet per mile. At John Redmond Reservoir, you'll encounter calm lake conditions rather than river current—ideal for kayakers and canoeists seeking flatwater paddling. The 30,000-acre reservoir offers excellent conditions for recreational boating and fishing.

**Facilities & Information**
Dam Site Campground features a sandy swimming beach, playground, two day-use shelter houses, and shower facilities. Reservations are available online or by phone at 620-364-8613. The facility is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. From Burlington, Kansas, take US 75 north approximately 3.5 miles, then turn west on Embankment Road and follow signs to the entrance. Nearby Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge offers additional exploration opportunities in the area.

Recreation
John Redmond Reservoir is around 30,000 acres total, provides excellent opportunities for fishing and hunting. White crappie, white bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish and various sunfish species can be found in abundance. Several trails wind through the hills and along the shore. The Otter Creek ATV area is located at the west end of the dam and provides 140 acres of trails for dirt bikes and ATVs. The area is open from sunrise to sunset.

Dam Site Campground features 21 individual campsites, a playground, two day use shelter houses, a shower house and two CXTs. Also at Dam Site are two boat ramps; a single lane with courtesy dock and a double lane. 
Natural Features
John Redmond Reservoir sits in the broad Neosho River Valley. The rolling hills afford the visitor an opportunity to see acres of agriculture and grassland, with vast fields of wheat and corn.

Large areas of grasses including bluestem, Indian grass and switch grass can be seen from the rolling hilltops. The lower areas provided a wooded cover of elm, black walnut, hickory, ash, hackberry, cottonwood and cedar.
