About This Access Site
Custer Crossing provides convenient boat launch access to Deerfield Lake and Castle Creek in the Black Hills National Forest, located approximately 25 miles west of Rapid City. The 400-acre reservoir offers 16 miles of shoreline and is a popular destination for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboaters. To reach the ramp, take Highway 17 west of Hill City for about 20 miles; Forest Service Road 607 provides the first access point to the boat launch and nearby facilities.

This public access site is well-suited for a full day of water recreation. Nearby Custer Trail Campground on the north shore offers 16 first-come, first-served campsites, plus a hiking trailhead around the lake. Black Fox Campground is another option within 10 miles for overnight stays. The area supports fishing, swimming, and scenic paddling, though note that day-use fees apply. The relatively calm reservoir setting makes it accessible for paddlers of varying skill levels seeking a mountain lake experience.
