The Byram boat ramp offers convenient access to the Delaware River at River Mile 156.1, located on Route 29 just 3.4 miles north of Stockton. This concrete ramp is maintained by the New Jersey DEP and is best suited for trailered boats and small watercraft; large boats are not recommended. A daily or annual permit is required for all launches (canoes, kayaks, and motorized vessels). Permits can be purchased at the nearby Bulls Island Main Office (2185 Daniel Bray Highway, Stockton) or by calling 609-397-2949.
The Delaware River in this section is a major waterway with an average flow of approximately 30,000 cubic feet per second and an average current velocity of about 3 feet per second. Paddlers should be prepared for moderate current conditions typical of a large, flowing river. The site's location on the Lower Delaware National Wild and Scenic River provides access to a scenic stretch characterized by forests, farmlands, and historic villages. This is an ideal launch point for day trips and longer paddles exploring this free-flowing section of the eastern United States' largest unimpeded river.
