About This Access Site
El Dorado-Area 8 provides boat access to El Dorado Lake, a substantial 8,000-acre reservoir impounding the Walnut River in Butler County. This is a well-developed recreation area offering a boat ramp along with camping facilities and hiking trails, making it ideal for day trips or extended stays. The surrounding park includes over 4,500 acres of managed parkland with scenic overlooks of the lake.

The Walnut River feeding this reservoir is a large stream (Stream Order 7) with an average flow of 1,064 cubic feet per second and modest gradient of 3.3 feet per mile, creating relatively stable paddling conditions. The impounded lake environment is well-suited for kayakers, canoeists, and recreational boaters seeking calmer water than the flowing river below. For extended recreation, nearby areas offer additional amenities including a marina at Shady Creek Area, a bait shop and swimming beach at Bluestem Point Area, and the Walnut River Area with an amphitheater and swimming pond.
