**About the Water:** Elephant Butte Reservoir is a large impoundment on the Rio Grande, created by the 1916 Elephant Butte Dam as part of the Rio Grande Project. The reservoir offers a scenic desert setting and relatively protected water compared to the free-flowing Rio Grande sections upstream. Check current water levels and conditions before visiting, as reservoir levels can fluctuate seasonally.
