About This Access Site
Fishtrap Creek provides primitive boat access to the Big Hole River in the Anaconda area, offering a good put-in point for paddlers and anglers looking to explore this section of southwest Montana's blue-ribbon trout waters. The site features a basic boat launch along with camping facilities, toilets, water access, and trailer parking. While less developed than some neighboring access points like Divide Bridge or Jerry Creek, Fishtrap serves paddlers seeking a more rugged outdoor experience on the upper portion of the river.

This location sits within a 73-mile stretch of prime float-boating water between Wisdom and Melrose managed by the BLM and Montana Fish & Wildlife Service. The section between Sawlog and Fishtrap features several islands that provide excellent opportunities to stop, explore, and wade fish. The slower-moving character of the upper Big Hole makes this an accessible section for canoeists and kayakers of varying skill levels. To reach the site from Butte, take the Divide Exit off I-15 (approximately 30 miles south) and follow signs to access points west of Divide along Montana Highway 43. For more information about facilities and conditions, contact the local BLM office at 406-533-7600.
