The Fountain City boat ramp provides convenient access to Pool 5 of the Mississippi River, located just off Highway 35 on the south side of town near the park. This site features two concrete ramps suitable for launching kayaks, canoes, and larger motorboats, with ample parking available. The downtown area also offers an additional boat dock option with temporary dockage, plus nearby food and lodging services for extended trips.
Paddlers should be prepared for the Mississippi River's significant size and current. As a major river with an average flow of over 685,000 cubic feet per second and average velocity of 11 feet per second, this section demands respect and appropriate experience. The river corridor here is bordered by scenic, steep wooded bluffs rising 100-600 feet, and the area falls within the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, offering beautiful scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities. For emergencies, contact the Buffalo County Sheriff at 911 or (608) 685-4433.
