Ft. Dupont

Fort DuPont offers public access to the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal via a state-operated boat ramp located in Delaware City. The ramp is accessed through the Fort DuPont State Park entrance on Route 9 and is situated across the Branch Canal from Delaware City Marina. This location provides convenient access to the C&D Canal, a major sea-level waterway connecting the Delaware River to the Chesapeake Bay, making it ideal for recreational boaters, kayakers, and canoeists exploring the region.

The site serves as a good launching point for paddling the C&D Canal and accessing nearby attractions. Delaware City Marina is nearby for fuel, provisions, and supplies. From the area, boaters can also access ferry services to Fort Delaware State Park and other historic sites. The canal itself accommodates recreational traffic alongside commercial navigation, offering relatively protected water conditions compared to open bay paddling.

When planning your visit, note that the C&D Canal is a working commercial waterway, so be aware of larger vessel traffic and follow navigation protocols. The surrounding Fort DuPont State Park area provides additional recreation opportunities.
