The Port Tobacco River is a substantial waterway—classified as a large river (Stream Order 6) with moderate current and adequate depth for most recreational paddling. The area's sheltered bay provides calm water conditions ideal for launching, while the river's connection to the Potomac River offers paddlers access to extensive downstream exploration. The site's location near Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge and Thomas Stone National Historic Site makes it an excellent base for combining paddling with regional historic and natural area visits. Goose Bay Marina is included in Charles County's Water Trails publication, which provides additional paddling route information.
