The Great Cacapon access point on the Cacapon River offers convenient launch access to one of the Potomac system's most scenic waterways. Located in Morgan County near the town of Great Cacapon, this ramp provides paddlers with entry to a 112-mile river known for its meandering course through beautiful Appalachian landscape. The access sits near where the Cacapon joins the Potomac River, making it suitable for kayakers and canoeists looking to explore this section.
The Cacapon River is popular with paddlers seeking calm, scenic paddling with good smallmouth bass fishing opportunities. A minimum water level of 2.0 feet at the Capon Bridge gauge is recommended for canoeing and kayaking. Paddlers should be aware of the Old Cacapon power plant dam downstream—at normal water levels, most boaters can navigate the fish ladder by pulling up adjacent to the dam and carrying boats down; at higher levels, portaging to the left is advised.
Several hiker-biker campsites are located within 10 miles of the access, including White Rock, Cacapon Junction, and Leopards Mill, making this a good staging point for multi-day paddling trips. Check current stream conditions through the USGS streamflow monitor before launching to ensure adequate water levels for your planned route.
