About This Access Site
The Greenbush boat ramp provides direct access to the Penobscot River at Mile 55, making it a convenient launch point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorized boaters exploring this popular Maine waterway. The ramp accommodates small to medium-sized boats and is located in Greenbush, Penobscot County, roughly 14 miles north of Bangor. This access point works well as either a starting point or takeout for multi-day paddling trips on the Penobscot.

Paddlers should expect mostly flatwater conditions with some swift sections and shallow ledges between Greenbush and upstream access points. A popular 14-mile route runs from Howland Boat Launch to Greenbush, or you can shorten it to 10 miles by putting in at Passadumkeag. **Note for motorboat users:** Water levels downstream of Passadumkeag are often too shallow for motoring; plan accordingly to avoid hauling your boat. The nearby Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Milford offers additional paddling opportunities in the region.
