About This Access Site
The Handsboro Community Center boat ramp at James Hill Park in Gulfport offers convenient access to Bayou Bernard with two launching lanes suitable for boats of all sizes. The facility features non-floating courtesy docks, asphalt parking for approximately 50 vehicles (with dedicated trailer parking for 10 boats), and a sandy beach area ideal for launching kayaks and canoes. The park also includes a playground and other amenities for families.

Bayou Bernard's character varies depending on which direction you explore from the launch. East of the Cowan/Lorraine Bridge, the waterway becomes marshier with limited development, offering more natural paddling. West of the bridge, the bayou features numerous boat docks, seawalls, and rock rip-rap structures. The area connects to Turkey Creek, which flows into Bayou Bernard and is popular for fishing, canoeing, and wildlife viewing. This launch provides an excellent starting point for both casual paddlers and anglers exploring Harrison County's coastal waterways.
