Heart Butte Reservoir (also known as Lake Tschida) near Elgin offers excellent boating and paddling opportunities with 10 boat ramps and 10 primitive campground areas spread around the lake. This 142-foot-high dam on the Heart River creates a popular recreation destination in Grant County, and the access site features barrier-free parking along Highway 49, about 15 miles south of Glen Ullin. The reservoir provides a tranquil paddling environment and is well-suited for kayaking and canoeing in calm waters.
The site includes six primitive campgrounds equipped with wells and vault toilets, plus RV hookups and lodging options nearby for extended stays. A convenience store and restaurant are also available in the area. The reservoir is managed by the Bureau of Reclamation (Dakotas Area Office, (701) 250-4592) and is known for good fishing, particularly for walleye, crappie, catfish, and white bass.
